Personal Development Summary

At the beginning of fourth year I had only created two videos previously; a title sequence in second year and an experimental video in third year which was the inspiration for this project. It was a risk taking on a video based project for fourth year having very little experience but I knew that video production was what I wanted to do as future career- and still do. The experimental video in third year was the first module out of the three years that I genuinely passionate about and it didn't feel like work, I enjoyed every part of the process, from the concept, pre production, filming and editing.

Filming and cinematography

When I started fourth year, my videos were below average in regards to understanding how to make an interesting and engaging video. I have experimented and therefore learned about the power in using different camera shot/ angles, camera movement, location, composition, lighting etc. These techniques developed naturally through comparing my videos to videos that I watch and artists work that I was looking into for the literature review. An example of one of my videos that didn’t have enough location, camera angles, movement and well lit is “Dee and Scope- I’m done”. This was through lack of time as the two boys lived in Glasgow and so I only had one day to shoot everything for the video. This put a cap on how much I could capture and if I had more time I would have taken more time to light the green screen better so it would have been easier to edit, I would have shot at least another 2 more locations and used a dolly for camera movement.
Learning how to set up my camera and how to prepare for a shoot has also been important. I have learned to take more time finding the right composition in the shot and not rushing into filming.

Premier Pro and After Effects

When I first started fourth year, I had never even opened Premiere Pro or After Effects.  I feel that my editing skills have been the most significant and greatest learning curve. I used to have to google “how to cut a clip in premiere pro” which was soul destroying and frustrating. But through trial and error and the help of tutorials I have came out the other end with a vast knowledge of both. Through learning the software from scratch I am most importantly efficient with time. I don’t have to spend hours trying to figure how to do something and because of that I can get more done. Understanding and learning the software has improved the quality of my footage and I now understand the techniques that can be applied to raw footage to adjust to make more professional and of a greater quality. As Colour is an important part of my project it was very important to understand how to alter and control colour within my videos.

The Construction of videos

Doing “Visual music” as my project has made me significantly more aware of music and the power it can have.  When exploring the field of visual music, I very quickly became aware that it was not just artists who specified specifically in visual music but that the relationship between music and visuals is everywhere from music videos, tv adverts, installations, title sequences, live performances etc.  Having this in depth knowledge of visuals and music will hopefully improve the way in which I construct visuals in future and I will never throw in a piece of music at the end without putting considerable though as to how the aesthetics of the two work together.

What can I take away  for my project “Visualising Music”?
Not only have I learned a significant amount about the history, current artists and the construction of visuals for visualising music. I have a great knowledge about the relationship that visuals and music have together which I hope will give me a great advantage when going into video production. I have learned so many transferable skills that can be applied to any future jobs.
Musical and visual characteristics have taught me so many valuable lessons from timing, dynamics, repetition, rhythm, tone etc. All these characteristics can be used in any video and by learning significantly about how to use them and how to reflect on the music I have taken on a whole new outlook on constructing my videos.
One of the best personal outcomes from this project is being able to critically evaluate and analyse my own work through the development of the critical framework which assessed the case studies , practise based research and finally my own work.

What could I learn in the future?
Even though my editing skills have gone from basically nonexistent to being able to edit confidently and efficiently I still have a lot more I can learn to produce higher standard and more professional videos.  In regards to filming and cinematography, camera movement has been my weakest area but that has more to do with the equipment than my ability to do it. I plan on buying a dolly for my tripod which will give me freer and smoother movements.
Finally, I am very proud of what I have learned in the span of 9 months. This project has produced my biggest learning curve in video production to date and with further development, learning and the right guidance I will hopefully achieve in getting a job that I want.

FINAL VIDEO

Well it has been a long year but finally here is the final version of the video. The last edit was very close. But there was a few edits I made where I wasnt quite 100% happy with. I edited from 1:10- 1:33 ish as I felt It wasnt as dynamic as the music and it needed something more to make it as dynamic as the music. I added zooms on the accentuated parts! I also added some more small glitches to the end which I had forgot to add it previously

2nd Edit

Well like I said, David didnt like the middle of the video so here is the re-edited 2nd version. Lets hope he likes it a little bit more than last time! I personally really think the middle abstract part looks so so much better than the 1st take. I think it makes the sound more interesting as its the least exciting part of the whole song, So I think the abstract visuals add a more engaging element to it.

Abstract testing

Well since I am going to go down the more abstract footage for the middle part. I have done some wee tests as I think I have to be really careful to what I add. I done want to take away from the nice vintage tone of the piano footage, but I dont want to play it too safe at the same time. So I am going to focus on colour and timing for this part and make sure they are correct and I think it should look good! The first part I am testing is from 1:10-1:33 ish, the side videos are very boring and dont have very much movement so I am going to try and add some more movement but not too much to take away from the center video

The video Below is the origonal section that needs to be changed.

Other business cards

Ok so I said I would get other business cards printed, so here is my design, I wanted it to be in keeping with my other ones.

Business Cards

Well, I've been doing a lot of thinking about the exposition recently, and I noticed everyone else business card designs and saw them putting their work on them. Dont get me wrong they look amazing but it got me thinking, how can I make a good first impression and make me stand out! I cant exactly put a video on paper!! So I started thinking along the lines of holographic and lenticular...after doing a few days of research, I started to notice something missing...THE PRICE! I could not for the life of me find a price for say 100 lenticular business cards, all websites said to give them a call. So I started doing the rounds and calling, after a few unsuccessful calls, I phone this company called 3d images and I spoke to the owner, David. at first I asked how much would 100 lenticular business cards would cost...to which he replied, 2-3 pounds EACH, so that would be around 300 quid...so I told him about me and that im a student trying to stand out and lo behold, he said that he always tries to help students out and that he would do me 10 for £25. Now I know 10 isnt a lot so my plan is to only give these ones out to potential employers who actually seem interested. I will print simple business cards too. He told me to send him two images. Here are the original ones that I sent him.

He then emailed me back saying the second image, the parts were too small for lenticular printing so below are the final copy.

1st Complete edit

Ok so here it is, the first complete edit. I so glad to have it full all the way through, but it is nowhere near finished yet. I am really not too keen on the middle section but I will wait and see what David has to say and get him opinion on it.

Testing on the TV's!!!!!

Today is TV testing day! Well it was a bit of a disaster. But its best to try these things out before the showcase or it would have went very wrong. We used 3 different tvs attached to 3 different DVD players, complete chaos!!! The timing were completely off  So after discussing, for next week we are going to test them out on a laptop and hopefully get some sort of software that can play all 3 videos at the same time.

The main glitch-Partical shower

This is the main glitch that will happen on the side tvs, I am really happy with how it turned out..well in comparison to the particle tests, they look really good!

Interactive music video

This is something, everyone should have a look at. Basically, it is an interactive music video in which your cursor movements are recorded. I know its not exactly visualising music, but I could help but post it on my blog because its video ideas like this that turn viral and get a lot of attention so its a video to learn from!

P.S 80% of people did touch the model!

First wee test of the 3 tvs

This is just a wee test to see how the videos look together. It is really hard to work on videos when you can see what is on the other screen at the same time. So it is important to keep on doing tests like this to make sure the footage works well together.

Natural piano effect test

This is a test to try out my idea of using the piano footage for the effects instead of making computerized ones. I LOVE how it turned out. This footage used was actually taken while I was moving the camera into a different position and I loved how the light look like it was "licking" (like the sound at that time). I think aesthetically it is a million times better that the particle effects I did a few days ago

Particle Testing

well today I have testing out more particle and glitch effect tests. I really dont like them. No matter how much I tried they looked awful and didnt compliment the aesthetic of the piano footage. So what I have decided that would look better and would work a lot better with the old textural aesthetic of the pianos, is to use...the piano footage with some clever editing!

30 sec clip for showreel video

Well we were all told to create a 30 sec clip for the showreel by the 8th and I finished mines last night. This has also been a really good experience to see how my final video might work out. I have learned a lot about what I think works and what doesnt. One thing that Belinda pointed out that all the videos I have been recently been making are exactly to the beat and everything is exactly on point. So what I wanted to do with this video is to create a fun and playful feeling with the piano footage. Empathising that when you play piano it is in the view of the player and it sometimes doesnt have to be exact.Where as the computerised glitchy parts in the video are exactly time and exactly on point which is coherent with the formal computer, gets nothing wrong feeling. This idea of having two contrasting sets of timing came from watching the ipod "bounce" advert which you can look at a few blog posts down. What I really liked about the video was that the ipods bounced to the bass of the beat but everything else in the song was free? the visuals only followed one element of the song and it worked really well, so thats where the idea came from.

NEON

Well I have some exciting news! I have been asked to help out with the organisation of neon this year. As you saw from my blog at the beginning of fourth year I went to most of last years events as they related to my project. So I am really excited to be involved this year round. I will probably be involved with the promotional videos and advertising....exciting :D

Film day!

Well after a lot of phoning around and asking numerous amounts of people, I finally got a hold of pianos to film. The lovely lady at Vintage strings along perth road let me film in her shop. She had a hug amount of pianos and even took the entire front of the piano off so I could see all the working parts fully. I also filmed the grand piano but even though it looked really good there wasnt as many moving parts in comparison to the stand up piano

Intro test

When I was looking for online tutorials for my glitching ideas I came across this tutorial and thought it would be a good idea so have a cool animation that I can put in front of all my videos, so here it is! not the finished article but I am quite pleased for my first attempt!

You can get the sound from here: http://www.freesound.org/people/Glaneur%20de%20sons/sounds/34172/

Russ Chimes - Turn Me Out

I have just came across this music video. WOW I really love the use of colour as well as the movement. It kind of makes me wish that I could have found this before I did my hands and feet video to say it was inspiration.. but ahh well. I love the use of the hand gestures and the repetition. Even though it is a dance song the set and location has a not very night club atmosphere but I really like that, its a nice contrast. I love the us of the bold colours also. I think it really compliments the overall tone of the video.

British science association- kids day

Well last thursday I went along to Charleston Community centre with the BSA for a kids science event. It was very fun but a wee bit stressful, working with kids and a camera isnt the easiest of things as they tended to focus more on me than the actual workshop but anyways, it was roughly an 1.5 hours long and the problem was because all 3 workshops were in the same big room, the sound was so echo-y and you couldnt hear each individual person speak clear enough so what I have done, is taken all the best bits ( and the parts where the kids are playing up too much to the camera) and added some music. I think it worked so much better than showing the entire 1.5 hours, because lets be honest who is really going to sit through it all? Have a look here :)
